Matt has a long history of involvement in sport. In the 1990’s and early 2000’s he was heavily involved in rowing, living at the Australian Institute of Sport and competing in Australian teams. He then took up mountain bike riding and raced in the 24hr world championships. In 2015 he competed in the Australian team at the Karate world championships (Go-Ju Ryu).
Competing internationally in several sports has given Matt an understanding of movement patterns and how to train the body to do what we want it to do. This has led to a move into Exercise Science. This has been driven by seeing people around him age and realising that there is much that could be done to help people we care about maintain their abilities and quality of life.
Kristy and Matt have been married for 30 years. Kristy looks after all the behind the scenes work of Strength for Living. You may see her when you are training or talk to her on the phone. Feel free to chat with her about your appointments and payments.

By applying a mix of knowledge gained through experience and academic learning, we plan for safe, progressive exercise starting from your current abilities and building towards goals for a stronger, healthy future.

We provide training for athletic development in most areas of sport. By Evaluating your current situation and goals, we can work with you to develop and implement a training program to maximise your physical potential. This involves applying training principles and knowledge gained through years of personal experience and study to assist you in moving from where you are now to where you want to be. These principles apply if you are are 25 or 65. Matthew has significant experience in athletic development both as a coach and as an athlete and loves to see people succeed in their chosen sport.
Matt is knowledgeable and explains things in an easy-to-understand way. He then patiently guides and motivates us to try more challenging things. We have been training together for about 12 months. We train, talk and laugh hard. Training together is a great way to keep our minds and bodies fit and healthy.
Although I was already a pretty fit 69 year old, I have been seeing Matt now for about 18 months and feel I have made significant progress with my strength in that time.
He has taken me through his program at a gentle pace so that I have never had sore muscles or felt that anything was being strained, and he was able to modify what I was doing after I developed bursitis (unrelated to his training).
I certainly feel stronger, though it does take me a day to recover fully after a session! It means I can lift things, and cycle better, than I did before. And in addition I really enjoy our conversations during our time together.
Your knowledge and manner of explanation is wonderful. Thanks for the interest you have shown in each individual.
He is an inspiring guide who talks the talk but also, very importantly, walks the walk in this area of fitness
Matt makes me comfortable in the gym environment. It is a long time since I have done something like this, he makes sure I am able to do what is asked and explains the why and how of what is needed to get the benefits.
